It all started in 1952 when a group of 17 men formed the Society of Joseph to help support the Franciscan Missionary Brothers in their work with people in need of special care. Now with hundreds of members, the Society comprises men of all faiths living in the communities and counties surrounding the Brothers' facilities
The specialized, compassionate care provided by the Brothers to their nursing home residents includes many important services not covered through charges to the people receiving that care. These services -- such as socialization programs and dental care -- improve the quality of life for residents. And these are the kinds of services that are made possible, in part, through the Society's financial support. Additional information on the Brothers and their work can be found by clicking here.
Each year, the Society of Joseph generates tens of thousands of dollars -- equivalent to the cost of hundreds of days of resident care. These funds are raised through the Society's membership dues from regular and lifetime members, individual donations, and an annual raffle held among the members. Dues are $125 per year, and lifetime memberships are available for $1,250.
All men are welcome to join the Society -- and to experience the fellowship and rewards of charitable work. The Society has an annual dinner which, in 2007, celebrated 55 years of compassionate help for the Brothers in their work.
"To help ensure that the Society of Joseph remains viable for years to come, we encourage people in the communities we serve to join this very worthwhile organization," said Brother Bernardo Trosa, director general of the Franciscan Missionary Brothers. "For many years, the support that this group provides to us has been important in our ability to care for our residents. And, we hope you'll consider becoming a part of the Society."
The Need for Help
Have you ever needed help? It seems we all have at one time or another. And, thankfully, we are often able to find a caring person to assist us in some way -- whether it's by lending an ear or lending a helping hand.
Just as you've needed help, many others are in need as well. Men and women of all faiths -- from all walks of life. People who need special care in order to lead their lives amidst the difficulties of illness and old age. And, that's where the Franciscan Missionary Brothers come into the picture. They've helped thousands of people by providing compassionate, specialized care that meets many of the needs of those they serve.
But, like everyone else, the Brothers need help, too. Ever grateful for the blessings that have been bestowed upon them, the Franciscan Missionary Brothers are fortunate to have the support of kind and generous people like those who belong to the Society of Joseph.
For many, the need for help is ongoing. Such is the case with the people for whom the Brothers provide care on a continuing basis. And, such is the case for the Brothers themselves -- who rely upon the compassion of the hundreds of men who proudly form the membership of the Society of Joseph.
It's appropriate to consider a quotation attributed to Sir Winston Churchill: "We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give."

"Lord, make me an instrument
of Your peace;
where there is hatred,
let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy."
